Applying to B-School
You've chosen a school (or a few), so now what? As daunting as the process may be, don't procrastinate - get started with the application process as soon as you can.
Start small by getting your ducks in a row. A few basic things you'll need to consider:
- If you haven't already, order your college transcripts - in most cases, this can be done online. There will be a small fee. You can usually have them sent either to you or directly to the institutions to which you'll be applying - just be sure to request an official transcript. If you have them sent to you, they'll be enclosed in a second sealed envelope. Do NOT break the seal or you can't submit it. If you want a copy to see for yourself, ask for an unofficial transcript as well.
- Be very sure you can articulate why you're pursuing an MBA. You'd be surprised how many people can't. Just wanting a piece of paper isn't enough - establishing your goals will help you to focus the rest of your application.
- On that same note, be prepared to explain why you are applying to your chosen program. Not only will you find that it's easier to write your essay, but the schools like to know that you've done your homework, so to speak.
- Think about your work experience, and consider any relevant internships, summer jobs, or even small-scale business ventures. (Run a Web site or blog? Sell any products or services? Think seriously about including those things in your essay, even if it just seems like fun to you.) Business schools want to see your path, and all of these things can be valuable in assessing your direction and motivation. Remember that while diversity of experience is good, being "all over the place" can seem unfocused. Establish a clear progression.
